Post Game/Pre Game

Have you heard the news that Bray/Hunter/Patterson will be leaving a season early to enter the NFL Draft? After watching this game tonight, you got to wonder why.

There is no doubt about the raw talent in these players. They are exceptional. But after a performance like this you have to wonder if another season in the college ranks could polish up these players nicely.

I really have nothing other than that to say about this game. It was heartbreaking. Neylands Maxim #1: The team that makes the fewest mistakes wins. And that just wasn't the Vols.

All fans can talk about now is how someone snapped a terrible photo of Gruden watching the Vols game on his flight to Phoenix taking notes. Compiling a Top Ten Reason to Never Coach at Tennessee list perhaps?

Jesus people get a grip.

On the other hand look at Urban Meyer and his coaching tree. He's undefeated at Ohio, Dan Mullen undefeated at Miss. St. (until after the Crimson Steamroller they are about to experience) and Charlie Strong is undefeated at Louisville. Jesus Urban, are you creating an army?

Then you have Sabans boys. I think Nick Saban runs everything. Coaches everybody. And hires coaches to sit there and look pretty. He must teach them nothing. Ok, so Muschamps not bad off, but his team still doesn't look great.

That brings us to tonight's Bama-St game. Do we even need to talk about this? This is Alabama, not Troy... or Tennessee.

Bama 44-10

Until Next Time,

Yours in Orange,

Bama-Miss St.

Ok, so I was wrong about the outcome of Tenn/SC. At least the Vols put up a fight 'til the end.
About a quarter left in the UGA/FLA game and I'm shocked at how sloppy this game has been. The intensity in this game comes as no surprise. Jawing back and forth is the norm in this rivalry, but good lord, I've lost count of turnovers at this point. I still like the Dawgs to get this done.
Moving on to the next SEC battle of the night, Bama/Miss. St. pits two undefeated SEC West teams against each other with national title implications on the line. Bama is the favorite at home, as the oddsmakers in Vegas have State as 20 something  point  underdogs. Give Dan Mullen credit. State has been a perennial doormat in the SEC for a very long time. Losing to the Bulldogs has been the nail in the coffin for various SEC coaches through the years, including Alabama's previous head guy, Mike Shula. I can still remember being a student at the Capstone when Shula's team fell to Sylvester Croom's bunch. The sign on the outside wall of a local business that was closing down read, "Out like Shula. " Things have since changed in Tuscaloosa, and while a loss to State tonight would certainly be disappointing, Nick Saban would be in no danger of losing his job. Mississippi St. has grown tremendously under Mullen, and although their competition this season has been less than stellar, Coach Mullen clearly has his team on the rise. Both State and the Crimson Tide are colliding tonight with undefeated records hanging in the balance. Statistically, State stacks up pretty well, but statistics tend to take a backseat to talent and depth when the grind of four quarters begins to take its toll. State will fight, and probably keep it close for most of the game. In the end however, Alabama is too balanced and too deep on the roster to let this one slip away. This Tide team is on a mission and refuses to go the way of the 2010 squad. Coach Saban has done a masterful job keeping them focused. The recruiting classes of the past few years haven't hurt either. Bama wins this one, but the final score won't be indicative of how well State plays.
The Tide keeps rolling, 38-14.

Do you think Jon Gruden will be looking on to get an early look at the competition he'd be facing in the SEC should he decide to take the job at Tennessee? Vols fans better hope not. Nick Saban has built a juggernaut that no coach would want to face, especially a coach coming into a mess like the one in Knoxville.

Gameday Oct 27

The hot topic tomorrow will be SEC East upsets. Tennessee visits South Carolina and will likely be the last opportunity Coach Dooley has to make a case for his continued employment in Knoxville. A loss here isn't the end of the world for the Vols, as the remainder of their schedule is very favorable, and could land them a bowl appearance; but finishing the season without any major SEC victories is something the Vol nation has certainly grown tired of.

South Carolina seemed to be rolling earlier in the year after steamrolling the Georgia Bulldogs, but as the Gamecocks often do, they followed up a great performance with a loss to LSU, and a dismal performance in the Swamp against Florida a week later.

Tennessee has a shot, but it seems unlikely that the Ole Ball Coach will allow his team to drop three in a row. Still, I like the Vols chances, and I'm rooting for Dooley to keep his job. A win here may or may not be enough. Only time will tell.
UT 28-SC 24

This year's trip to the cocktail party sees Georgia and Florida battling it out once again in another classic rivalry in the SEC.

The Bulldogs, who looked strong earlier in the season, fell flat on their faces against South Carolina, and opened the door for many to once again question whether or not Mark Richt could win the big game. Well, he'll get one more chance this year to prepare his team and silence the naysayers once and for all.

This game is huge for Georgia, and I think they get it done. I'm not sold on Florida as the number two team in the country. Not, yet.

PreGame Post

It's here. The chance for the big win. Not for Dooley, but for all of us. The Vol Faithful who have watched and waited patiently.

We're not crazy. We know the unlikeliness of a win today. But we have hope. Hope that the offensive juggernaut we've seen already this season can show up. We have hope that big Dan McCullers and AJ Johnson can be the dominant defensive players they are.

And even with all the talent out on the field in orange, it don't mean a damn lick if the coaching isn't there. And we don't have hope that it will be.

FINAL: 34-17 SC.

Gameday or Coach Change?

On the eve of what I consider the last big game for the Dooley regime in the house that Peyton built, what is the biggest story? Is it the undefeated SEC West match-up of Bama and Mississippi State? Probably so. Not if you bleed orange.

This is the last chance for Coach Dooley. The rock has already been painted. The people have spoken. So for Dooley, this is it. Can you beat the Head Football Coach at home? All signs point to NO. Does it even matter?

If you're a blogger, chances are you spend a lot of time trolling the web, reading other people's opinions and developing your own based on fan bias and things you've read.

First things first. Vols fans: Gruden is not going to come to Tennessee. It's not going to happen. Even if it does, tell me the last successful NFL coach to come to a college team and be successful. It doesn't happen. Get over it.

How are you spending the perfect Friday night? I, myself, am watching the Cinci-Louisville game. Charlie Strong is not John Gruden. This is a real possibility for UT. A good coach. An SEC guy. And let's all be honest here, he's black. This is going to be a major recruiting tool for a major program. Ok, so is Joker. But come on! Kentucky?! This isn't basketball folks. It's Big Orange Football.  And Kentucky is no major football program.

What I'm going to say next is going to sting to the Vol faithful: We need to be Tennessee. "Oh, well that wasn't so bad." Right? Wrong.

This Tennessee program has spent so much time trying to emulate success that we have yet to figure out how to create it. We don't need a Bama boy as AD. We don't need a Sabanite as head coach. We need to do things our way. The General did it his way. The General won.

Tennessee fans, quit trying to be Alabama. If anything, we should be shooting for Vanderbilt right now. And that is pathetic. But what the hell are you going to do? You see success, sit around and bitch about how bad we are. Your only solution is to steal their program. IDIOTS! If you are this kind of fan, seal up anything orange you own and go out and buy Crimson. You'll be much happier in the short term.

Let's find Tennessee football again. Let's make the Third Saturday in October a 365 days a year focus. The two best programs in the SEC going pound for pound.

Until Next Time

GO BIG ORANGE!

Birmingham 1901

Well Hello Folks,
Dusty here. Welcome to our inaugural blog for 365 Saturday In October! This is a blog about rivalry, heart, soul and most importantly: FOOTBALL!

You'll see our post here from time to time, a little rivalry between opinions and teams. I am a life time Vols fan. My friend, Hawk Horton (who you will hear from later),  is on the other side. A Crimson bleeding Rammer Jammer. No respect is lost here.

In 1901, the Vols and Tide took to the field and and played a hard fought contest, ending in a tie. This is what this blog is based off of. A tradition. A rivalry. A love of something so much bigger then all of us. Football in the South. This is the SEC. Everyone else, take a seat, enjoy watching how we do things here.

As we go on, we'll talk about current issues in the game, a little bit of history and little bit of shit talk.
Until next time,

GO BIG ORANGE!
